Our Foundation

The foundation of Beechtrees Bluefaced Leicester flock consisted of ewes obtained from the Baylis flock inVirginia in 1995, and additional ewes from the Firth flock in Nova Scotia in 1996. We commonly refer to these original ewes as our ‘domestic’ bloodline ewes. Subsequent generations that are infused with UK genetics are typically called ‘improved’ bloodlines.

 

Our Goal

Our goal is to produce the best possible Bluefaced Leicester utilizing the genetics available to us here in the States and from the UK. We’ve set very high breed standards for our flock based on correct type and traits in keeping with the UK breed standards. We also strive to meet the needs of the USA purebred breeders, the commercial crossers, as well as the needs for the National flock.

 

Our Breeding Scheme

Beechtree Farm has probably used and produced more Bluefaced Leicester sires in its breeding program than any other purebred USA producer. Our thought behind the rapid turnover of sires is that the youngest generation represents the best possible genetics and they should always be at the forefront of the breeding program. I think this has put us out front in the consistence and quality of the Bluefaced we are producing for ourselves and for other breeders as well.
